The Civil Engineering Department was established in the year 1958 with an intake of 60 students. In 1994 the intake was increased to 90 and further increased to 180 in the year 2014.Presently the department runs both UG and PG (Environmental Engineering and Structural Engineering) programs with intake of 180 in UG program and 18 each in PG programs. Department is recognized as Research Centre by Visvesvaraya Technological University Belagavi in the year 2002 and at present 39 research scholars are pursuing their Ph.D. and nine research scholars have been awarded with Ph D degree.
Department has been given autonomous status since 2007 and has been accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) thrice in 2005,2009 and currently accredited for three years in 2022 Valid till 30-06-2025.
Department has got qualified and dedicated team of faculty and staff members. All the laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art equipments. Department has organized number of workshops, training programmes sponsored by AICTE, ISTE, VTU, TEQIP and ministry of home affairs. In addition to the academic and research activity the department is also serving the society by carrying out consultancy work and specialized training programmes to the people involved in the construction industry. The department has got separate training and placement cell. Department has MOUs with several Industries and these MoUs help the students in getting exposure to industrial environment and also for conducting Industry Institute Interaction events. The Department has got a consultancy cell with an annual income of about Rs.36 lakhs.
The department is identified as State Technical Agency for PMGSY project in Karnataka State and is actively involved in the third-party inspection works of roads, buildings, water supply and sanitary works entrusted by district administrations. Also, it is recognized as State Resource Institute (SRI) under National Programme for Capacity Building of Engineers in Earthquake Risk Management (NPCBEERM) by Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt of India.
